Our Pastor
Let Us Count it All Joy and Glory in Nothing but the Cross of Christ…
My personal belief is that all pastors should love their church so much that they’d attend it even if they weren’t the pastor. That’s the kind of church Rocky Mount is for me: I’d come here even if I weren’t the pastor.
For me, going to Rocky Mount is more like stepping into the middle of a sitcom than going to a typical church service. The people are laid back and funny. I can’t wait to get to church each week to see what’s going to happen next. And the best part is, our people love Christ and seek Him with all of their heart. Wow! What a great combination. They love God and have fun living for Him.
I don’t pastor Rocky Mount because I have too, I do it because I love our people, I love our times of worship, I love how we are one big happy family, and I love the fun we have every time we get together. I simply love this place, because it’s the best church I’ve ever been a part of!
I hope you will come visit us soon,
I was born November 26, 1960 in Columbus, GA. Shortly after birth the doctors told my parents that I would not live very long: they were told this repeatedly until I was twelve years old. Thankfully, I was raised in a Christian home with parents who continuously believed and prayed for healing. Christ showed His mercy and by the time I was thirteen, Christ had healed me of every disease.
Sadly, between the ages of 13 and 17 I walked away from the Lord. I started hanging around with the wrong people and soon found myself involved in theft, vandalism, drugs and alcohol. My greatest struggle during this time was alcohol. I had alcohol in my room at home, my car, my locker at school, and even hid it on the church bus so I could get drunk before going to service.
After witnessing many of my friends die because of drug and alcohol related automobile accidents, I realized that something had to change. I stopped drinking and doing drugs and asked Jesus to forgive me and help me. He did. To this day I thank God that I did not die or end up in prison for all of my stupidity during that time. God is gracious.
I eventually settled down and become very active in the church youth group and began telling everyone at school about Christ. At the age of seventeen, I accepted the call of God on my life to be a minister and preached my first sermon that same year at Hilton Terrace Baptist in Columbus Georgia. I also began working as a youth leader and children’s minister at North Highland Assembly of God, also in Columbus.
After graduating high school, I and a group of friends started a ministry to reach the unchurched youth in Columbus. We formed a band and began singing about the love of Christ. Within a few months more than 40 youth had accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. My passion for the lost continued to grow and in 1981 the Lord led me to Atlanta to assist in forming a similar outreach ministry at Mount Paran Church of God.
God blessed the outreach ministry in Atlanta and within a year the number of youth accepting Christ was averaging 50 per week. The church youth group grew into the hundreds and we were soon invited to share our ministry with other churches all over the country. By the end of 1992, our ministry team had traveled to every state in the US, in addition to mission trips to the Philippines, Mexico, and Canada. During the eleven years I served with Broken Heart Ministries (a.k.a. Mylon & Broken Heart, a contemporary Christian music group), I was blessed to witness thousands of people make a personal commitment to Christ.
God also blessed our ministry with several awards and other achievements. We received Grammy award nominations and Dove award nominations almost every year from 1981 to 1992, winning a Grammy in 1988 and several Doves from 1985-1992. I also had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s top recording artist, record producers, professional athletes, ministers and ministries during this time.
In addition to God blessing the ministry, He also gave me a family. Shortly after moving to Atlanta I met Carol and we were married in 1983. In 1988, God blessed us with our precious daughter, Shayla.
By 1992, My love for the original language of Scripture and the ancient Jewish culture led me back to school where I attended Lee Bible College and Mercer Seminary. After graduating, I moved back to Columbus and began working with several churches doing evangelism. I also worked with the youth and singles ministry at Wynnbrook Baptist.
By the end of 1992, I was called to be the senior pastor at Upatoi Baptist Church. God richly blessed my time there. The Sunday school and worship services more than tripled and many new outreach ministries were started.
During this same time my wife Carol was diagnosed with cancer. After battling for five years, she went to be with our Lord in April of 2002. Shortly after, I resigned from the church in order to heal and spend more time with my daughter.
By February of 2003, I began pastoring again at Plant City Baptist Church in Lanett, AL. During this time I met a beautiful, godly woman named Wanda Key. We fell in love and were married on September 17th, 2004. I also gained two incredible stepsons; Justin and Jacob. A few years later I would also be blessed with a wonderful daughter in law, Holly, and two beautiful granddaughters, Emily and Olivia.
Shortly after we were married, my love of music led me to start a new ministry to encourage musicians, songwriters and studio owners. Over the next few years, Wanda and I made several trips to Atlanta and Nashville to minister. I also began ministering to other pastors and ministry leaders across the country, which I continue to do to this day.
In January of 2006, I was called as an interim pastor to Rocky Mount and in December 2006 I became pastor. This is the most awesome group of people I have ever served as a pastor. They are eager to grow, they’re not afraid of change and they are willing to do whatever it takes to reach people for Christ. Most of all, these people are FUN to be with. I can’t believe how blessed I am to have such a wonderful Christian family. These people are truly my friends in Christ. My prayer is that all who need the love and goodness of Christ would join us. Our people truly follow the example of Christ; they don’t condemn, rather they love and help all people.
