Our Story
Every story has a beginning. This is ours…
Our story begins with the love and kindness of our God, who moved upon a handful of men and women more than a hundred and seventy years ago. They worshiped together for the first time in 1851, naming the church Rocky Mount, because it set on a rocky hill facing east.
From the very beginning our purpose has been to share the love of Christ with everyone in our community. In 1868, three years after the Civil War, the church building and property was given to those recently freed from slavery as a sign of Christ’s love and our love for them. It was during this time that Rocky Mount moved to its present location.
In 1926, the local Methodist Church was destroyed in a fire. This allowed us an opportunity to demonstrate our love for Christ, help our fellow Christians, and be an example to the lost in our area. Our members were eager to serve and for the next fifteen years Rocky Mount served as home for both congregations.
Over the next fifty years or so, the Lord continued to provide us with opportunities to share the love and joy of Christ. From 1980 until 1998, our original building was enlarged multiple times. This allowed us to increase the number of services held each week, as well as, expand our service to those living in the Lake Harding community.
In 2005, a new sanctuary was completed to facilitate our growing church family. This led to a number of remodeling projects including an outside play area and a covered picnic area to help with our increased number of young families and children. We also acquired 23 acres of land in 2012, overlooking the lake for future ministry growth and service to the community.
During Rocky Mount’s 170 year plus ministry, we have sought to spread the love of Christ, to reach out and help those in our community, and to be a witness to all people. From the beginning, we have experienced God’s love, His grace and His forgiveness. Our times together are filled with joy and laughter, and the warmth of true friendship. Rocky Mount is a family friendly environment where all people are welcome to serve Christ together.
For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female.
For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26 & 28
A View of Lake Harding from the Dock on the West Side of the Long Bridge.
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
